In 2005, my father gifted me my great-grandfather's piano as a housewarming present. Over the next 15 years, I played it regularly, taught my children how to play, and even became a piano teacher myself. Unfortunately, in 2020, the 100-year-old piano finally gave out. It could not hold a tune and the cost of replacing the strings was not worth the investment. I made the decision to replace it with a grand piano and say goodbye to my musical companion. However, I discovered that many old upright pianos were being thrown away in landfills because store owners lacked space and people didn't want to buy them. I refused to let my piano meet the same fate and instead, decided to repurpose it into a writing desk.
I repurposed the empty frame of the piano to create a writing desk. I added backlighting that beautifully highlights the strings and brass plate. After removing the keys and inner components of the piano, I stained a solid piece of wood to serve as the desktop.I write from this desk – a different movement of my fingers - instead of playing from it. It’s my own personal inspiration that things can change.
